Acquiring hot skills may sound like a good idea in theory, like those mentioned in the article “7 Hot Skills for Slow Times” in the April 2009 issue, but how do you put them into practice? Following are some ideas that can help:
- Investigate company programs
Many corporations offer their employees financial support for technical training. Take advantage of all of the programs your firm offers.
- Seek out low- or no-cost online training
A wide variety of inexpensive electronic training options are available for creative professionals. Lynda.com, for example, is a subscription service providing courses on a wide range of topics, including Flash, web deign, digital video and more. Some specialized staffing services offer free online training for freelancers, as well. For instance, The Creative Group offers registered associates complimentary access to more than 8,000 online courses.
- Take night classes
Community colleges often offer helpful classes that are easy on the pocketbook.
- Attend industry seminars and conferences
Attending conferences and seminars sponsored by HOW, AIGA, Ad Club and other industry organizations is a great way to acquire valuable skills within the industry. Check Out HOW events
- Pair up with a mentor
Working with a mentor whose skills you admire is a useful way to get candid feedback that can help you grow.
