What Happens the Day After HOW Design Live?

After a year of planning, prepping and scheduling this annual design conference that has helped shape so many creative careers, it’s hard to believe HOW Design Live 2016 has already come and gone.

When I joined the team in April, our talented Program Partners already had the conference program nailed down. My predecessor Bridgid McCarren Agricola will be a tough act to follow. She did a fantastic job as HOW Design Live Content Director. We’ll enjoy seeing where the next chapter in her professional journey—Creative Director at LEAP Digital Agency—takes her. But no need to say goodbye, because Bridgid will continue to play a consulting role for the conference.

Since this was my first HOW Design Live, I focused on consuming as many sessions as possible and totally immersing myself in the topics, personalities, and design inspiration that define this creative industry.

Have you ever wondered how we pull together such an amazing program? How we decide which famous graphic designers to invite for keynotes and topics to include that will help you be a better designer? Which activities to offer in the exhibit hall and in the city beyond?

The planning process actually starts with our attendee feedback. HOW Design Live 2016 was brilliant—but there’s always room for improvement. So thanks to everyone who took the time to chat with us in Atlanta, and share their thoughts about this year’s program. These face-to-face conversations really help us plan for the next event.

Then we drill down further with our post-conference survey (next year we’ll collect your feedback daily with our new app). The day after the event, the marketing team is putting the finishing touches on the survey to make sure we capture your most relevant observations and comments in an easy, intuitive format that will encourage the greatest number of responses.

These are 5 interesting take-aways:

  • Top companies sending 10 or more attendees included The Coca-Cola Co., Deloitte, JLL, Hallmark Cards and Georgia Pacific
  • 49 of the 50 states were represented at this year’s HOW Design Live
  • We had attendees from 36 countries/territories including Sweden, Germany, Viet Nam, Australia and Peru
  • 15 countries sent two or more attendees
  • The exhibit hall does have the industry’s best swag, but 80.7 percent of survey respondents also said they found new products on the show floor that can help them in their work
