Corporate Identity Through Logo Design
With the goal of increasing public awareness for the world’s largest library, Chermayeff & Geismar’s tea, launched an internal brand strategy analysis and determined a logo icon was needed. “The result was incorporating the American flag with an open book. The logo’s curves instilled a sense of motion and an unlimited flow of knowledge emanating from a central core.” A new wordmark was also established, dropping “The” from the official name.
Powerful Corporate Identity Design
This corporate identity design includes one of the world’s most recognized logos – the NBC peacock. Chermayeff & Geismar’s creative team admits it “was one of the most involved redesign efforts we’ve ever taken on.” The new peacock needed to be easily implemented in corporate brochure design and required powerful corporate identity branding to compete with the other two broadcast networks, both of which were more highly ranked in viewership than the last place NBC.

Clean and Simple Corporate Logo Design
The merging of Chase National Bank with the Bank of Manhattan Company required new corporate branding that effectively expressed the company’s strength and status as the second largest bank in the U.S. It was 1957 and Chermayeff & Geismar felt a symbol would convey the company’s corporate identity more easily than the newly adopted name. The now familiar abstract logo was dismissed immediately by many top executives, but would eventually come to define the powerful financial brand.

It may come as a surprise to New Yorkers that Barneys was once a discount store for men. That just shows you what a strong corporate design can do for business. The Chermayeff & Geismar creative team noted that, “In looking at the possibilities, we found a series of wonderful typographic coincidences.” Deleting the apostrophe in “Barney’s” not only helped with typography alignment, it also incorporated a sense of elegance and European je ne sais quoi.

“Our solution was to create a strong, simple icon to be used consistently across the company’s divisions.” The Merck & Co. design was strategic with a powerful identity concept behind it. Chermayeff & Geismar’s team created a logo that would become central to Merck & Co.’s corporate design. “A symbol should never be a decorative element in an identity system,” acknowledged the creative team.

When National Geographic extended it brand into television, books, film and more, Chermayeff & Geismar were hired to develop a more cohesive design that could incorporate all multimedia platforms requiring corporate web design inspiration as well as other forms of customer touch point interactions. The yellow border generated the strongest brand recognition, but it needed to be standardized and corporate design assets implemented included typography, Pantone colors and a more standardized identity system.

The first and last letter ‘X’ proved to be an important identity trigger that to encouraged rong recognition and industry recall.
