12 Stark Differences Between Freelancing and 9-5

ilise-new-headshot-bug-1-11Do you have days when being a freelancer just feels too hard and you think to yourself, “I’m just going to get myself a job and be done with this!”

You don’t, because it’s actually not all that easy these days to get a job, especially if you’re of a certain age.

But what if a job just happened to land in your lap? Would you take it? Would you drop everything — the freedom and the frustrations — for the illusion of security that a 9-5 position offers?

That’s what happened to our very own Deidre Rienzo of Connect with Copy. A former boss offered her a position and she thought seriously about taking it, then decided against it. Still, they needed someone to fill in while they searched, so Deidre negotiated a nice deal with a beginning, middle and end, which gave her a chance, over the last month, to get a taste of the dream without giving up everything.

I asked her to write about it and she has written a few posts on the Marketing Mix Blog. I love the most recent one, “Back to corporate land: 12 things I didn’t expect.” Here are my favorites.

  • Your heart won’t be in it (as much as your own business). Sure, you’ll want to do a good job, but it won’t be the same.
  • Distractions are constant, and there’s a lot less you can do about it.
  • You are not in charge. I will say it again. You are not in charge! At all. Not even close. Enjoy believing in what you do? Get over it quick.

Read all of them here — hilarious!
