19 Creative Survival Tips

What do your peers do to break out of their creative ruts? Creative-thinking coach Tom Monahan polled graphic designers via the HOW website about what makes their creative juices flow freely. It may seem obvious but, hey, maybe “taking a nap” is just the advice you need to hear. Here are their suggestions:

  1. Listen to music.
  2. Look at art or photography.
  3. Spend time with children.
  4. Hang out with other designers.
  5. Dream.
  6. Read.
  7. Go for a drive.
  8. Break out of your routine.
  9. Walk away from your work and take a break.
  10. Exercise.
  11. Sleep.
  12. Visit a bookstore.
  13. Encourage others.
  14. Don’t work just for money.
  15. Switch to another project.
  16. Work on paper instead of the computer.
  17. Think like a child.
  18. Talk it out; don’t let ideas just rumble around in your head.
  19. Enjoy being creative.
