Design Conference Inspiration: A Fable

I love fables and stories with a moral. It’s so much easier to understand the point of a story. I think it might be nice if every presentation or pitch ended with something like, “So the moral of this pitch is if you engage another agency, you will get knights and not dragon slayers,” or “…you will miss your target audience completely and drown in a sea of competition.”

I think HOW Design Live could benefit from a personal fable. I actually haven’t come up with one yet, but I did find an interesting business fable at If you want to understand the impact of HOW Design Live, you should at least know  the four tracks that make up the event – The HOW Design Conference, The Dieline Package Design Conference, The Creative Freelancer Conference and the InHowse Manager’s Conference.

The attendees, speakers, exhibitors, staffers, each come from some field of design. Most are pioneers in the industry, all are leaders and marketplace decision-makers, still others are new to their design job and want to learn as much as possible from the pros. With that in mind, here’s my choice for a HOW Design Live fable. Feel free to tweet other fables to me @howbrand.

A little girl was watching her mother prepare a fish for dinner. Her mother cut the head and tail off the fish and then placed it into a baking pan. The little girl asked her mother why she cut the head and tail off the fish. Her mother thought for a while and then said, “I’ve always done it that way – that’s how babicka (Czech for grandma) did it.” 


Not satisfied with the answer, the little girl went to visit her grandma to find out why she cut the head and tail off the fish before baking it. fishmeal

Grandma thought for a while and replied, “I don’t know. My mother always did it that way.”


So the little girl and the grandma went to visit great grandma to find ask if she knew the answer.


Great grandma thought for a while and said, “Because my baking pan was too small to fit in the whole fish”.

Moral: “Be a voice, not an echo.”
