The New Last Man on Earth
The 2007 I Am Legend movie starring Will Smith as Dr. Robert Neville as the lone survivor of a plague that wipes out humankind is the third feature film adaptation of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel. The first, was released as The Last Man on Earth and it starred Vincent Price who locked himself away by day and hunted vampires at night. The second, The Omega Man, with Charlton Heston opened in 1975, and he too hunted killers by night and tried to save humanity by day. All three movies had the heroes sending out radio signals trying to reach surviviors, but to no avail. That was then.
Today, we can get a message out via thousands of platforms and communicate in even more ways. As creatives that is exactly what you are asked to seamlessly do every day, but the platforms are becoming more versatile and, well, more.
When Francis Lawrence, who directed, I Am Legend was just a few days into shooting, he didn’t feel that the actors playing the “Dark Seekers” were scary enough. He felt, instead, that they were simply acting like scary Dark Seekers. So when the scene was finished he went into the studio and used CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) on the actors, millions of dollars worth, and made them scarier. Said Francis to the New York Times in 2007, “We just weren’t able to get out of people what we really wanted,” he said. “They needed to have an abandon in their performance that you just can’t get out of people in the middle of the night when they’re barefoot. And their metabolisms are really spiked, so they’re constantly hyperventilating, which you can’t really get actors to do for a long time or they pass out.”
Computer graphics are used more and more to enhance images in art, print, video, web design and more. On November 5-7 in Chicago, the HOW Interactive Design Conference will bring together the top minds in interactive design, to discuss CGI and other programs for designers, web designers, illustrators, graphic artists and others.
