What is SEO?
SEO—or Search Engine Optimization—refers to the process of improving the visibility of web content by boosting its ranking on Google. This multifaceted process includes creating strong copy, performing keyword research, interlinking and more.
SEO and content strategy aren’t simply ways to boost the visibility of one article or blog post; these processes shape the credibility and success of an entire website. So what can you do to boost the visibility of your web content?
These six SEO tips will strengthen your content marketing strategy and help you boost the visibility of your web content.
1. Strong Copy Trumps SEO.
You’ve probably heard it before: “Content is King.” And it’s true! The first rule of optimizing content, no matter what, is that none of your SEO strategy matters unless you have great content that people want to see. If you don’t, it’s time to stop and work on your copywriting skills. Using Google Adwords to identify strong keywords related to your website’ overall topic, write corresponding content that answers questions and provides solutions.
2. Do your keyword research.
Speaking of which, Google Adwords is a great tool if you’re looking to improve your SEO score. Look for keywords with a high KCI—keyword competition index—or low competition, high search volume. Choose the most relevant keywords that also have the strongest KCI and incorporate them into your content—or create content that addresses the topics you’ve found on AdWords.
3. Share the link love.
Linking is an SEO staple. Not only does proper linking improve the credibility of your work on Google—it also helps your readers learn more about the topic you’re addressing in your work. Link those strong keywords to relevant content on your site and on related websites. Link to articles, products and services that will provide your readers with more information about the topic.
Of course, one of the best ways to improve your Google ranking is to get high-value, high-ranking sites to link to your content. Some SEO pros will tell you to ask these sources for links, but that’s an outdated concept. These days it’s all about earning your links via valuable content…
… which brings us back to our original concept: Create great, original content. Start there and work your way toward a better SEO strategy, step by step.
