Subscription Questions

How can I contact customer service with questions regarding my subscription?
It’s easy to manage your subscription online. Or write: HOW, P.O. Box 421751, Palm Coast, FL 32142-1751. If you prefer to call us, dial (800) 333-1115 (or 386-246-3365 from outside the US and Canada) and our Customer Service Representative will be happy to help you. When can I expect my first issue?
Your first issue will arrive approximately 4 to 6 weeks after we receive your order.

When can I expect to receive my issues each month?
HOW is published 6 times a year on a bimonthly basis. Your magazine should arrive by the 20th of the month prior to the first month in the issue date. For example, your July/August issue should arrive by June 20th.

When does my subscription expire?
The date your subscription expires appears on your magazine mailing label, above your name. This label is affixed to the wrapper in which your magazine arrives. The date indicates the last issue in your subscription. Please see sample of mailing label below.

How do I submit a change-of-address?
Click here to notify us of an address change. Please notify us 4-6 weeks prior to your move, to guarantee uninterrupted service.

Why do I get additional invoices or renewal notices after I’ve responded?
We make every effort to prevent this from happening. However, sometimes your response and our letters cross in the mail. If you receive a notice from us and you’ve already responded, simply ignore it. If you receive several notices, it is possible that we did not receive your response, and you should contact us.

How do I give a gift subscription to HOW?

How do I order back issues of HOW?
Back issues are available online in print and digital versions. If you prefer to call, you can contact our customer service department at (855) 840-5126 to order. If you prefer to order by mail, send an inquiry to: F+W Media, 700 E. State St., Iola, WI 54990.

How can I register for HOW events?
Please visit our events page and choose the event you’d like to register for. If the event is currently accepting registrations, there will be a link a the top of the page.

Design Tutorial Questions

What is a Design Tutorial?
A Design Tutorial is an online webinar especially for Designers. These webinars are lead by industry experts with information Designers need and want the most. The Design Tutorial is broadcast over the Internet with the live audio being delivered through your computer speakers or over your telephone. The presentation is displayed directly from the Presenter’s computer on to your computer screen. The Q&A is managed through a chat-style submission system with questions being answered by the Presenter for the entire class to hear.

What equipment do I need to attend?
All you need is a computer or iPad. You will be able to view the presentation and listen to the audio over the computer speakers. See below for complete system requirements.

For PC-based users:

  • Required: Windows® 7, Vista, XP or 2003 Server
  • Required: Internet Explorer® 7.0 or newer, Mozilla® Firefox® 3.0 or newer or Google™ Chrome™ 5.0 or newer (JavaScript™ and Java™ enabled)
  • Required: Internet connection, with cable modem, DSL or better recommended
  • Recommended: Minimum of Pentium® class 1GHz CPU with 512 MB of RAM (2 GB of RAM for Windows® Vista)

For Mac-based users:

  • Required: Mac OS® X 10.5 (Leopard®), OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard®)

How do I find out about upcoming Design Tutorials?
There are several ways to find out about upcoming Design Tutorials. Check for upcoming Design Tutorials at MyDesignShop.com or sign up for the e-newsletter are the easiest ways. Once you attend a Design Tutorial you will be added to our notification list so you will be notified of upcoming Design Tutorials (and discounts for registering early).

How do I register to attend?
Go to MyDesignShop.com, select the Design Tutorials you want to register for, add it to your cart with any other items, and check out.  On your order confirmation, you will find the link to register for the class. Click the link, fill out the registration information, mark your calendar, and enjoy the Design Tutorial.

Can I sponsor a Design Tutorial?
Sponsored Design Tutorial are a great way to get the message out about your service, equipment, and supplies. Design Tutorials are meant to be educational not sales pitches, so you will need to make sure the content meets the educational expectation. Contact your sales representative for information to make this happen.

What if I sign up for a Design Tutorial and can’t make it or have computer problems?
Don’t worry if you can’t make the live Design Tutorials, everyone that registers for a Design Tutorial will receive a follow-up email providing with the Design Tutorial download link so you can watch it at your convenience.

Can I view an On-Demand Design Tutorial on my PC?
The Design Tutorial file is available for PC or Mac. If there are handouts they are in a PDF format easily read by any computer.

How do I get my work into HOW?
We would love to see what your firm has been up to and consider it for future use in the magazine. The best way to get featured is to keep us in-the-know of things you’ve been up to, especially with images and updates of recent projects. You can also feel free to submit any ideas that you think would make for a more full-fledged article, whether it’s an unusual business practice/approach your firm is especially good at  (for example, work/life balance or working for non-profits) or another interesting angle or perspective to share with other designers. Either way, you can send any news to editorial at howdesign dot com and we will follow-up if we do decide to feature you. Learn more about how to get your work into HOW.

How can I send you a press release?
Feel free to send any press releases or updates about projects or story ideas to this email address or to our office at HOW magazine, 10151 Carver Road, Suite 200, Blue Ash, OH 45242. You may address it to “HOW Editorial.” It is also helpful if you can include images of projects in your press releases. Please note that, unfortunately, we don’t have space in HOW magazine to include all of your other important announcements of promotions, new accounts and awards. (Plus, we work so far ahead, that these items would be dated by the time they reached print.) We appreciate your interest in HOW!

How can I submit a story idea?
Much of HOW is written by freelancers, so we are open to working with new writers. The best way to get an assignment from us is to pitch us ideas appropriate to our audience along with your resume and clips. We are always on the lookout for writers who understand design and the designers behind it. Feel free to continue to submit article queries if you have any ideas for a great article you think would fit HOW. If we decide to pursue your idea, an editor will be in touch. How can I submit a book proposal?
HOW Books publishes 16 titles per year. Topics include graphic design, design business, creativity and pop culture. Please email a synopsis of your idea to Megan Patrick.

Does HOW offer discounts to educators or students?

HOW provides designers and freelancers the option to receive information about graphic design & special offers via SMS text messaging.

What is the price for these messages?
There is no additional charge for text messages from HOW. However, message and data rates may apply. Check with your carrier for details on your plan.

Are there any additional carrier charges associated with the service?

You can expect to receive no more than four text messages per month.

No, they are currently only available for subscribers within the United States.
