How to raise your rates

Postby bbrian » May 5th, 2010, 1:21 pm

Hey, I just ran across a site where the guy is giving away his freelance proposal and how he gets large 5-figure projects. It's really good info! Anyway, here's the link if you want to check it out:
http://www.freelanceformula.com

I usually just troll the forums and make a reply every now and again, but I wanted to share something back since I take so much! Unfortunately you have to opt-in, but trust me, its worth it. [:)]

I'm too paranoid to opt in... tempted to check it out, but I am used to 99% of things like this online being scams or just general BS. If anyone else can attest to any legitimacy in this I may do it. I guess I could set up a temporary free web based e-mail account to try it but there's no way my main e-mail address is going in there. lol

Yea I'm not taking a chance either. I raise my rates and give my clients a heads-up beforehand and let them know any quoted project I will honor the rates in them. Most of the stuff is flat rate now.

I haven't had any trouble with spam from this - the guy seems legit (although I used my secondary email address as well just to be safe).

I think the only way to get rich by being a freelance is to work hard and be more creative than the rest... In our company http://allpopart.com we work hard everyday...
Its a common sense thing... why would anyone show you how to get rich... if they are already rich, why do they charge for it?

This is the most important point and very often one of the key things missing from a freelancing business. Before you even consider raising your rates, make sure you have thought out your overall pricing strategy.

If you have a legitimate reason that you need to raise your rates, this is always easy to explain to a client.
If it's because you want a BMW, well, good luck ripping your clients off.
