What are the differences between web design and graphic design and which career should I choose?

What are the differences between web design and graphic design and which career should I choose?

Postby Anna Hussie » April 7th, 2011, 8:13 pm

I am currently a junior in high school (also taking classes at the local college to get ahead) and want to have a career in some sort of computer based designing, but I can't choose. The two I'm mainly considering are web design and graphic design. I personally would prefer being in graphic design, but I hear that the income isn't that great, and I'm not that creative or decisive, so I'm leaning towards web design. I'm just not that sure, though.
I'm trying to find out class and skill requirements, annual salary, and maybe more details about each career. Also personal input would be great, too!

As the use of Internet is growing day by day, scope is unlimited for both of them. Graphic design is a part of Web design. You can choose any according to your preference. Remember that creative idea is the most important thing required for the graphics design career.

The web designer is a person who designs the website and involves in programming also whereas graphic designer is a person who designs the templates, logos, banners, etc. As a web designer, the person must have knowledge of html but graphic designer don't. Web designers are experts in websites designing using CSS, HTML and graphics while graphic designers are experts to do layout for company brochures, posters and logos.

If you are not creative or decisive than I suggest you just stay away from this business all together. A web designer needs to be creative and have an understanding of design and user interaction. If you want to get into coding that is the role of a web developer. It is more a of a tech oriented position but let me *** you that you will need to be creative and decisive as well. As far as salary is concerned you might end up working a couple of freelance jobs at first, and trust me you will. This will really make you realize whether you want to stay in this industry or not.

Sorry I never actually answered your salary question. As freelancer the amount of money you make will depend on the type of client you get. There are many factors. Some clients think that you have a magic wand and can make changes instantly to designs and will end up working more than the client is willing to pay. Some clients have a bigger budget and are willing to pay good money, I have been in both situations. I believe if you work for a web design company your average salary for starting out is roughly around $35,000 annually. The more experienced you are the more money you will make of course. I think creative directors and leads make around $60,000 to $75,000 annually at design firms, but don't quote me on that.

Graphic design includes print design, logos, layouts and so on whereas web design overlaps graphic design along with technical phases where as web development is generally used to build functionalities by the use of various programming languages like PHP, asp.net and so on.
