This is one of those posts that I dislike having to send out, but feel it's VERY important. I know we're all going to the HOWLive conference to be inspired, educated and meet like-minded soul. However, it's important to note that most of us are traveling to a strange new city.
I've had several warnings this week about a recent surge in violence against innocent bystanders by roaming bands of young men and women in Chicago's more affluent neighborhoods. These FLASH MOBS, as they're being called by the police, are randomly picking people walking down the street for violence and petty thefts. Here are a couple of articles;

I didn't post this to make anyone afraid to enjoy the GREAT City of Chicago. After all, this is my hometown. I just wanted to warn my HOWies to be extra careful and follow a few tips that we try to give out before every HOW Conference.
1. BUDDY UP: Make new friends to attend the offsite events with. There are several after session activities planned and it's smart to travel in groups of 4-5 people.
2. DON'T BE SHY: Introduce yourself to a fellow attendee (usually easy to spot with our badges and bags) and ask if they'd like to grab a bite to eat or go shopping. Most of the attendees are traveling alone and would welcome the company.
3. TAKE CABS/TAXIS: Whenever possible, grab a taxi just outside your hotel's front door. It's safe and will get you from door to door without having to walk the city streets.
4. ASK LOTS of QUESTIONS: Local HOWies and Hotel Staff have very useful information and tips that they are more than willing to share.
5. BE CAUTIOUS: Sounds weird coming form me (Smitcat) but, really always try to be aware of your surroundings and who you're with. Better safe than sorry.
Once again, I don't want to scare anyone, I just want everyone to be aware of what's going on and how to protect themselves. In no way do I want any of you guys feeling like you shouldn't leave the hotel. Get out there, Explore the city and have a BLAST. Just make sure you stick together and be careful.
I'll post this on Twitter and Facebook, but spread the word to those who may not be connected.
