accumulating pricey fonts

Postby mscarborough » April 1st, 2010, 8:45 am

I am a first year graphic design student and am frustrated by the cost of fonts - I had no idea they were so expensive!! I am working on a project and searching over at fontshop.com and a family of fonts (containing all different weights and styles) I was interested in purchasing was almost $800.00! Honestly, all the fonts I checked out that I really would like to use were close to $200.00 minimum (and usually more since I desire to have an entire family of any particular font to work with). How, living on a designer's salary, does everyone go about accumulating a font library of one's own when they are so expensive?! I can't afford to purchase a new $200+ font for every new project I undertake. Any thoughts or advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

I've always just used the fonts that come with a Mac. There are plenty to choose from, and are technically bought and paid for.
