Existential Crisis: Training and Directions?

Postby kleinstar » December 31st, 2012, 12:32 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some guidance and suggestions about training and schooling given my background, which is perhaps unusual starting out in design.

I am trained as a psychologist, I just recently finished a master's degree. It turns out I find being a therapist incredibly emotionally taxing, to the point where I am working on a career change. I've always had an interest in design and visual art, and I'm realizing that this is really my passion. I've been reading as much as I can on design, typography, and taking online courses to brush up my skills in the adobe creative suite programs.

What I'm wondering is, given my background (a whole bunch of formal education), if it makes sense for me to pursue formal education in graphic design?

I've looked at a few online programs, such as Sessions College, and also considered trying to teach myself. I was also thinking of going a mentoring route, to see if I could find someone (who I would pay) to supervise my progress and give guidance, as an alternative to formal education. Does a diploma, certificate, or degree provide a step up in finding a job? Any thoughts on how will my existing education influence potential hiring decisions?

Thanks in advance for any replies!
