pricing

Postby ds » September 22nd, 2012, 10:08 am

I've been asked to bid an illustration project. It's for a fairly large company and it will be very high visibility. The will be pastel illustrations that will go on a variety of packaging of multiple styles. I bid the project, but I have a feeling that I sold myself way short.

total of 9 illustrations, about 32/26'.

TIme wise, i figured about 10hrs per illustration (should have left some room for error.)

So what did you decide to bid? (you don't have to answer that- just being nosey, lol)

Well, a big factor in this is how it's going to be used and for how long. I use multipliers based in if it will be shown nationally, internationally, for a month, for a year, just on the internet, in magazine, on posters ect...
The more boxes you tick the more it should cost really. I remember reading a post by an illustrator who produced some work for the Gap. They wanted ALL rights to her work FOREVER, and although she didn't say what she charged, she did mentioned that it paid of the lions share of her house.

I've always pretty much kept my freelance rates simple and based on an hourly rate. I don't charge by the hour, but I figure the final price quote by how many hours I think it will take me to get it done. I might adjust up or down depending on circumstances, but for the most part it doesn't matter if it's a Fortune 500 company or the corner bakery down the street wanting 20 hours of my work, it's about the same price.

I do the same but if my work is to inherently become a part of their identity, I charge a value component.
