Computer Choices

Postby StudioGirl » February 12th, 2012, 8:41 pm

Hi there! :) I just registered to the forum. I'm designer trying to get my foot in the door. My husband and i are opening a design business. More specifically logo design, at this point, but would like to eventually move into digital painting. However, we are in need of a second computer. Two artists, and one computer isn't ideal. Wondering what computer you would suggest? What kind of memory? RAM? The computer we currently have, slows once the file is too large. Personally comfortably with PC, but open to the idea of a mac, if it's the better way to go. Thanks ahead of time for your suggestions. :)

As you said that you are starting Design business then it i better to purchase high configuration of System because Design and development require high quality of Graphics and better Speed. So I suggest you to purchsed I5 or I7 processor, 2 or more GB RAM and Graphic card fore better Graphic design.

Well you can also choose Dell XPS latest laptop which have many specific features such as good warranty, backup support, and provide fast speed with browsing and HD games so use it if you have any further query then take Dell Support for better information.

You can use less hard disk power with hither ram. Such as 230/4gb

hi new to the forum too, but i am interested in what everybody is using for their personal/work computer. i am in desperate need of an upgrade and i am looking for suggestions like the OP.

the primary purpose will be graphic design, with big usage on Photoshop, Illustrator, QuarkXpress. i do enjoy my HD movies, and occasionally am finding myself encoding/re-encoding different movies to get them to play smoothly on my current PC and stream to other devices, but no actual movie editing.

there is the occasional PC game which i have not been involved in since my PC has fallen behind the times, but i'd like the ability to fire up a game or two once in a while.

my current system:
Windows xp SP3, (original XP install from 2006)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
2GB DDR RAM
NVIDIA Geforce 7800GT 512mb

i am goin to have to piecemeal this for budget reasons, so SSD and core i7 cpus are out of my league for now. here are my thoughts:
AMD FX-8150 cpu
ASUS M5A99X EVO motherboard

or
Intel Core i5 3570K cpu
ASUS P8Z77-V LK motherboard

keeping all my old hardware except for 8GB of DDR3 RAM. hoping to use Win 8 Rel. Preview until it goes on sale in October. i don't have a brand preference but for the money Intel still benchmarks faster overall. AMD tends to be easier on the wallet. the few photoshop and image editing benchmarks out there show a smaller gap vs the gaming benchmarks but it seems Intel is coming out with a new socket or a new chipset every month. I fear faster obsolescence on Intel hardware but AMD hardware can hardly be called competitive anyways. i'd like to hear your thoughts and no macs are not in the picture.

Personally, I've always used Macs, so I can't really comment on Windows hardware specifics, but the generalities pretty much apply across the platforms. I wouldn't consider buying any computer for graphics work that had under 8 gigabytes of RAM, and 16 is even better. Graphic designers are notorious for simultaneously keeping a dozen memory-hogging apps open at a time, and with anything less than eight gigs, things bog down. As far as disk space goes, bigger is better. Better still are redundant (backed-up) removable hard drives where files are stored. Both RAM and disk space are relatively cheap, so considering the huge difference they make, more is better.

My main work computers for several years now have been MacBook Pros. The portability is essential for me, and when I'm at home or at work, I plug the laptops into large desktop monitors (30-inch at work and 27-inch at home). This is likely an expensive setup for a student, part-timer or hobbyist, but my point is that this is an ideal setup (for me, anyway). So if you can afford the extra RAM or the bigger drive or the bigger monitor, get them. If not, get as much as you can for what you can afford.
