critique needed

I am a beginner to web design. I am making a site for my very small local religious community. The purpose of the website is to provide info and generate interest in the larger Baha'i world community as well. I am worried that my mockup of the home page provided below is too flat. I want the design to be classical so that it appeals to everyone, but I also want it to have energy and to be a little whimsical or at least cutting edge. Not boring. Any feedback will be much appreciated. Many thanks.
