This 2013 poster series for Western Australia’s Black Swan State Theatre Company combine photography and classic authors to create a sophisticated look. Created by Austrialian design firm Dessein , this series won Best in Show at the Creativity International 43rd Print and Packaging Awards – and I think you can see why they were show-stoppers.
Dessein has worked with BSSTC since 2005 when they helped with the theater’s 2011 rebrand. This year’s poster series focuses on select plays taken from the BSSTC’s favorite writers of the last 100 years. Each is meant to both follow the series theme and capture the fundamental feel and quality of the play.
While Dessein has won numerous awards in this competition and others, this is the first time a Australian firm has won Best in Show. The Creativity International 43rd Print and Packaging Awards includes work by designers and firm from 37 countries and, as the name indicates, its in its 43rd year, so this is an exciting win Dessein. And their posters resonated with the Black Swan Theatre Company, too, as their marketing and sponsorship manager, Nancy Hackett says:
One of the great things about working with the Dessein team is their ability to ‘reinvent’ Black Swan’s visual identity for each new annual theatre program, while consistently retaining a strong presence of Black Swan’s company branding in all materials.
And, since winning this honor, Dessein has been tapped for a branding project with a large commercial bakery among others. Tracy Kenworthy, Dessein co-Owner says “the biggest response has been from our existing clients, who are delighted for us and our achievement on the world stage. I think this reinforces their belief in us and what we’re producing for them.”
