I Heart Cool Postcards

Before I began working at HOW, I was completely unaware of the abundance of cool postcards that exists in the universe. Now that I know where to look, however, I can be inspired by cool postcard designs on a daily basis. …And I am obsessed. The addiction began when my boyfriend moved from Cincinnati (where I live) to Portland (the cool city in the state he grew up in), and we wanted to stay connected in hip and interesting ways. Not long after this plan was in place, I received a pack of ridiculously cool Polaroid photo postcards from The Impossible Project. (If you don’t remember my post about this inspiring initiative, read it here). Thus began my downward spiral.

Many of the coolest postcards I get come through the HOW and Print magazine mailboxes from graphic designers like you. Penguin recently sent a few featuring its Drop Caps book cover designs from Jessica Hische, which were absolutely lovely. Funny enough, Tandem Press announced its move to 1743 Commercial Avenue with a clever tow truck illustration on a black-and-white postcards. Others come from simple searches online. Want to announce your impending wedding celebration? Search “wedding invitation postcards” to the tune of 2.36 million options in .21 seconds. Have a long-distance friend you want to drop a line to? You can send them a stitched postcard with actual yarn. There are postcards that make you smart, postcards that teach you about the world, and postcards that just make you giggle.

Simply put, cool postcards have personality. So when Printaholic.com asked me to guest blog on a topic that would fall into one of eight categories—business cards, T-shirts, postcards, posters, flyers, stickers, photos or brochures—I jumped at the chance to write more on my new favorite theme. Check out my 15 coolest postcard finds by reading my 15 Postcards That Have Personality post, or delve into some of the other posts on design inspiration and how-tos. The site also has design templates and reviews of different printing companies for those who are crafty enough to develop their own cool postcards.
