When illustrators and filmmakers try to capture a dream world visually, I’m often left wanting more. It’s certainly a challenging task since no one’s dreams are the same. But reading the Japanese graphic novel GoGo Monster this weekend totally sucked me into an hallucinatory world. I had to let go of any preconceived ideas about narrative and just let the story wash over me. Sometime it didn’t make much sense, but once I got to the end, I realized I understood what had happened and that the story would keep unfolding for me the more I thought about it. (The first thing I had to get used to was reading from back to front and right to left. That’s a mind bender on its own.)
There’s a lot here for designers to learn about sequential art and communicating through images.
