Graphic Designer Fritz Klaetke Wins Grammy

woodyguthrieForget about Taylor Swift, Maroon 5 or FUN, the big celebrity at last night’s Grammys was Fritz Klaetke! He might not have been featured during the primetime Grammy walk, but he did beat out Sir Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones to win Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package for his work on Woody at 100: The Woody Guthrie Centennial Collection.

Created under the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, part of the Smithsonian Institute,  the boxed set includes a 150 page book of photos, letters and artwork. Klaetke recently spoke with Christopher Hughes with Boston Magazine about his nomination.

“I really wanted to use a photo where he was staring right out at you,” says Klaetke. “I thought that made a nice connection to the direct quality of his music. It’s very much like him singing to you. The trick was finding a photo that wasn’t used to death. Nora Guthrie had actually found this photo in a closet somewhere and it had never been seen outside the family. Once we found that, we thought, ‘this is it!”
