HOW Loves Chris Sickels

Yep, we’ll admit that we’re crushing on immensely talented illustrator Chris Sickels of Red Nose Studio and the quirky characters he creates. Chris’s whimsical worlds have graced issues of HOW dating back to his first cover for the June 1999 issue. Since then, he’s illustrated countless columns and three other covers, including the brand-new September edition of HOW, which is just now mailing to subscribers. (With this issue, Chris trumps design legend David Carson in number of HOW covers: Chris has done 4; David 3.) In the issue, Chris relates a story of his encounter with a very famous illustrator, who accused him of strutting like a peacock in his own self-promotion efforts. If you know Chris like we do, you’ll know how silly that sounds.

September marks HOW’s 23rd annual Self-Promotion Annual, and it features more than 100 winners in this year’s Promotion Design Awards. It also highlights some smart strategies from self-promo guru Ilise Benun on how you can make your design firm’s website more appealing to clients. These are easy tips that you can implement quickly, whether you’re simply updating your site or building one from scratch.

The issue also spotlights those crazy creatives at Minneapolis-based agency mono, whose Younicorn iPhone app generated tons of buzz for the firm when it went viral on the interwebs. Read a brief Q&A with the team from mono on

You can find the September issue of HOW on newsstands at the end of the month, or grab the print or digital version in now.
