Meet a HOW Live Speaker: Chris Elkerton

If you’ve been around the HOW Conference for awhile, you know of 3Dogz, who made back-to-back appearances at HOW several years ago. The two guys from 3Dogz (yeah, we know: math is hard), Chris Elkerton and Dave Gouveia, lobbied hard to score a speaking gig at a HOW event, and when we finally relented, they did not disappoint. Chris will be on hand in Chicago for an energetic HOW Design Conference session, Creative Stuff, where he’ll divulge a wealth of secrets and ideas for staying creative when the daily grind is getting you down. We recently talked with him about his past, his passion and the end of 3Dogz as we knew it.

What is your favorite design tool? Why?
My brain … mainly because I never know where it’s going to go.

What’s the strangest thing that has happened to you during your design career?
Being asked to share my knowledge with others!

Describe your favorite self-promotion. Did it work?
The original 3 Dogz “DOG FOODZ” can. It was a complete collaborative with all three of us and it was awesome! We worked with a great writer and illustrator and the complete package was a treat (pun intended). It got us a lot of attention/business

Do you have a pet project—a side business or a charity to which you donate time or services?
Street Soccer Canada (the Canadian contingent for the Homeless World Cup). There is SO much more I want to do with them! One guy started it all and paid for everything out of his own pocket. It’s TRUE charity work. And his results are amazing.

Can you tell us a little more about your Conference topic? What personal or professional experiences led you to this topic?
Working on a book for designers with Dave Gouveia, and the demise of our studio, led to the session. The experience of losing your “baby,” dealing with working in a non-creative environment now, but staying creative on my own is what’s going into it. And showing what others do in the same situation … it’s a share-fest!
