Meet the Design Ambassadors! (Part 1 of 2)

A little while back, we started looking for the next big design bloggers to be our first-ever Design Ambassadors. And we found them! We picked 10 great graphic design bloggers to be our Design Ambassadors, and you can find their links in the right sidebar of this blog. We’ve got little introductions to these new friends of HOW—five today and five next week! In no particular order, meet:

jen lombardi, design bloggerJen Lombardi

  • Blog: Creative in Cleveland
  • Twitter: @KiwiCreativeOH
  • Location: Cleveland, OH
  • Job/work situation: Head Honcho & Creative Genius at Kiwi Creative
  • What’s your dream job? Owning my own studio (which I do now) with a small handful of creative employees and a boatload of well-paying clients (which I’m working toward).
  • No. of years designing: 10-ish
  • No. of years blogging: 2
  • No. of years reading HOW: Since back in my college days.
  • Been to HOW Design Live before? Are you going this year? I went to the Creative Freelancer Conference in 2011 in Chicago and have been following their incredible LinkedIn group ever since. No go on Boston this year. 🙁
  • If you could meet any designer, living or deceased, who would you most want to have a drink with? David Airey, because he cited my blog post about spec work in his own blog last year. I’d want to thank him in-person for the huge jump in site traffic that made that my most popular post ever.
  • Who would you want to pick a fight with? Vincent Connare, designer of Comic Sans. (Isn’t that everyone’s answer?)

dennis salvatier, tanoshiboy design bloggerDennis Salvatier

  • Blog: The Tanoshiboy Chronicles
  • Twitter: @salvatier
  • Location: Los Angeles, CA
  • Job/work situation: I’m the principal and lead designer of Salvatier Studios, my little independent design studio. I offer design specializing in brand identity and illustration services.
  • What’s your dream job? My dream would be to design prints, posters and toys starring my characters and stories and sell them directly to my fan base. Taking on some occasional logo design wouldn’t be bad either. 🙂
  • No. of years designing: 13
  • No. of years blogging: 3
  • No. of years reading HOW: 7
  • Been to HOW Design Live before? I’ve never been and will be missing this year’s again!
  • If you could meet any designer, living or deceased, who would you most want to have a drink with? Rea Irvin, most definitely. He did it all, and he did it exquisitely. The New Yorker would not be what it is today if not for the creative hand of that man.
  • Who would you want to pick a fight with? Andy Warhol. I’d like to ask him “What the hell?”

j jason smith, design blogger, graphicologyJ. Jason Smith

  • Blog: Graphicology.com
  • Twitter: graphicologycom
  • Location: Phoenix, AZ
  • Job/work situation: Vice President, Creative Director at Moses Anshell
  • What’s your dream job? I’m doing it right now. Seriously. It’s awesome.
  • No. of years designing: roughly 17
  • No. of years blogging: 7 (Yikes!)
  • No. of years reading HOW: 10
  • Been to HOW Design Live before? No, but I’d like to.
  • If you could meet any designer, living or deceased, who would you most want to have a drink with? Helmut Krone. Responsible for a lot of the creative revolution in advertising during the ’50s and ’60s.
  • Who would you want to pick a fight with? David Carson. While I get what he is/was trying to do, I hold him personally responsible for a lot of grunge design that just won’t go away.

brandi moody, design blogger, ever so lovelyBrandi Moody

  • Blog: EverSoLovely.com
  • Twitter: @EverSoLovely
  • Location: Raleigh, NC
  • Job/work situation: I’m a full-time designer and illustrator, and founder of Ever So Lovely, Inc. I design for corporate companies and small business clients, but when I’m not designing pixels you can find me creating one of a kind hand-painted silk scarves or my handcrafted jewelry designs. I’ve always been an artist since I was little. By doing something that’s not on the computer, it allows me to have a tangible aspect of design and get my hands dirty.
  • What’s your dream job? I’d like to one day open my own brick and mortar shop/studio and have a front showroom where I can feature artists and designers from around the world. That and travel the world interviewing various artists and designers for my design blog.
  • No. of years designing: 15
  • No. of years blogging: 3
  • No. of years reading HOW: Since 1996
  • Been to HOW Design Live before? The timing’s never been right for me to attend, but I’m hoping to go next year — fingers crossed!
  • If you could meet any designer, living or deceased, who would you most want to have a drink with? Well I attended an AIGA workshop last year where Von Glitschka was our special guest, and I have to say he’s the type of designer you could have a drink with. He not only is a very talented illustrator but his sense of humor in his presentation style makes you want to pick his brain even more about vector art.
  • Who would you want to pick a fight with? Jonny Wan, because he’s an an illustration ninja! 🙂

crystal reynolds, design bloggerCrystal Reynolds

  • Blog: Creatives Cupboard
  • Twitter: createcupboard & crystalinkdesig
  • Job/work situation: graphic designer, solopreneur, freelancer
  • What’s your dream job? Publication design
  • No. of years designing: 15
  • No. years blogging: 1
  • No. of years reading HOW: 15
  • Been to HOW Design Live before? Are you going this year? I’ve been to HOW Design Live in 2001 and then last year at Chicago. I have my ticket purchased for CFC in Boston this year and have flights arranged—found some roommates and looking forward to meeting more amazing creative peeps in Boston.
  • If you could meet any designer, living or deceased, whom would you most want to have a drink with? Who would you want to pick a fight with? This past year, of all the creatives I have met, I think the one person I would have a real hoot standing off with would be James Victore. His honest, tell-it-like-it-is presence would really keep me on my toes. I would love the opportunity to get real with a guy who has made his way following his passion. That is a true mentor in my mind.

Join us and some of our Design Ambassadors at HOW Design Live next week in Boston!

Hey hey, David! I was just over in Europe, actually, but nowhere near Northern Ireland. I visited there about 15 years ago and would love to get back. I’ll definitely contact you if I get over there again!
