Jessica Helfand and William Drenttel created a design practice that serves the design community (Design Observer), the less fortunate, and their own needs. How did they do it? In this session, they will share how they leverage design thinking in their award-winning work, their business model, and to create social good. William Drenttel works at Winterhouse with Jessica Helfand, and is a co-founder of Design Observer, a website covering design, social innovation, urbanism and visual culture. He is design director for Teach For All, and is funded by the Rockefeller Foundation to develop models for design and social innovation. He is president emeritus of AIGA, an advisor to Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation, a fellow of NYU Institute of the Humanities, and a senior faculty fellow at Yale School of Management. In 2010, with Jessica Helfand, he was elected to Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) and the Art Director’s Hall of Fame, as well as being named the first Henry Wolf Residents in Design at the American Academy in Rome.
Jessica Helfand, a partner with William Drenttel in Winterhouse Institute and a founding editor of Design Observer, has written for many national publications, including the Los Angeles Times Book Review, Aperture and The New Republic. She is the author of numerous books on design and cultural criticism, including Paul Rand: American Modernist (1998), Screen: Essays on Graphic Design, New Media and Visual Culture (2001) and Reinventing the Wheel (2002), which formed the basis for an exhibit in 2004 at the Grolier Club in New York City. Her critically acclaimed Scrapbooks: An American History (Yale University Press, 2008) was named that year’s best visual gift book by The New York Times. Helfand received both her BA her MFA from Yale University and has taught there or the last decade where she is Senior Critic in the School of Art and a Lecturer in Yale College
Dana Arnett is a founding Principal and CEO of the internationally recognized firm of VSA Partners, headquartered in Chicago, with offices in Minneapolis and New York City. Arnett, along with his six partners, leads a group of 150 associates in the creation of design programs, digital and interactive initiatives and brand marketing solutions for a diverse roster of clients, including: Harley-Davidson, IBM, General Electric, Coca-Cola, Thomson Reuters and Nike.
