The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game

Designed in-house by game company Educational Insights, with illustrations by Lucia Gaggiotti, The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game is so adorable that I had to resist getting one for myself. Instead, I saved it to my Amazon Shopping List so a lucky child of a friend or relative will certainly be getting this from me for Christmas!

“The package and components of this color strategy game is a home-grown idea, developed and designed in house. We hired London/Italy-based illustrator Lucia Gaggiotti to bring our little squirrel to life. The tree-shaped package structure required a little back and forth with our factory, who spent time focusing on a structure that would stand up on shelf like a real tree. The game board is a printed label inside the box.”

Thank you for the shout out! I had so much fun creating and designing the game for Educational Insights. I was inspired by training chopsticks I saw while in Tokyo, combined with my squirrel obsession. Product Manager Brent Geppert and I spent quite a bit of time crafting the logs and the Squirrel Squeezers.

Initially, I wrapped Fimo clay around a pair of small kitchen tongs. Sculpting a squirrel on a log, I crudely mocked up what eventually became our cute Squirrel Squeezers. It’s very important to crudely mock up any idea you have as early as possible….a woman from P&G at your Austin HOW Design Conference spoke about this. She impressed upon me the importance of making an idea tangible as early as possible, even if it’s clumsy and simple.

The game has gained lots of pickup and attention…I believe it’s the combination of excellent game play, fantastic illustration by Lucia Gaggiotti, and my fervent belief that you have to chase your obsessions — even it they’re squirrels!
