IN-house INtelligence: Chart 36 – On-site Contractors, and the number is…

In-house INtelligence provides an overview of the in-house community in the form of a series of charts based on data retrieved from an AIGA survey to which over 1,100 in-house designers responded. Special thanks to Randy Johnson, a practicing in-house designer, for the chart designs.

Wow, I’m surprised. I guess 38.6% is a high number, but I used to work as an on-site contractor and now hire them every few months to help support our workflow. Do others find them to be unnecessary or is it simply a matter of budget? What are other designers doing when the work piles up (besides working 80 hour weeks)?

50% of my team are contractors. Adding headcount is close to impossible at this point and on-site contractors are my only option. I have found that is harder to keep contract employees long term. I try very hard to make them feel like they are just as vital as the full time employees and show that the company is committed to their development.
