INside Track: Dangerous Intersections

.

I’m guessing that, like the town where I live, you have a patch of road or an intersection that everyone acknowledges is a disaster waiting to happen. All to often, in spite of this common knowledge, the local authorities do nothing to address the problem. Unfortunately, what happens is that anticipated disaster does indeed happen and the dangerous intersection is redesigned to make it safer.

.

.

The same holds true for in-house teams though, fortunately, the stakes are not as high. Almost always there are stages during the execution of projects where near misses occur in either the timing or quality of the deliverables. If a pattern of close calls becomes obvious and consistent, rather than thanking the gods each time that nothing went wrong, it would be better to look at how to redesign that particular dangerous intersection. Any upfront pain, time and effort will be well worth the benefit of avoiding costly and embarrassing mistakes.
