INside Track – Disengage

My wife works at our local elementary school and recently attended a seminar on how to manage difficult students. One of the key catchphrases she came back with was – disengage.

It struck me that this is advice I could use at work when dealing with difficult clients and co-workers (who sometimes behave not that differently than the misbehaving students my wife works with – with apologies to the students). The key, I realized, is not to check out completely during a confrontation and certainly to not respond to poor behavior in kind. The trick is to emotionally distance myself and thereby address the issue in the most objective and effective ……………………………………………. way possible no matter how big the tantrum.
