INside Track: SSS – Strategic Staffing Strategies

The title of this post is redundant and your staffing strategy may be as well. I’d refer you to the In-house Intelligence chart 13 documenting how much time in-house designers spend on non-design activities. It suggests that when (should you ever be so lucky) you’re presented with a budget that affords you additional headcount, you may want to think twice before defaulting to hiring another designer.

The point here is that if you have, say, 5 overworked designers who are spending 20% to 30% of their day on project management, rather than hiring another designer, you may want to consider bringing in a project manager with those new-found dollars. That way you can pull out the project management function from the team of 5, freeing them up to do what they do best (and most efficiently) which is, of course, design. They’ll be happier and you’ll have a project manager who will take that function to a whole new level and love doing it.
