INspiration Wednesdays: Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

Happy Xmas (War Is Over)“, written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono and released as a single in 1971 has become a ubiquitous FM radio staple of the holiday season. The song was the final note from the 1969 campaign by Lennon and Ono to promote peace during the tumultuous and unpopular Vietnam War by using billboards, “bed-ins”, posters and ads in a full-tilt media blitz. The ads featured one simple message set in Franklin Gothic Extra Condensed black type on a white background: “War is Over! If You Want It. Happy Christmas from John & Yoko.” Although Lennon was sharply criticized for mounting what was perceived as a self-serving publicity stunt, his guerrilla marketing crusade remains one of the most distinctive global campaigns to raise awareness around world peace. And I can’t imagine the holiday season without this beautiful song that shares such a simple sentiment.

Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

So this is Christmas and what have you done,
Another year over, a new one just begun.

And so this is Christmas, I hope you have fun,
The near and the dear ones, the old and the young.

A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one without any fears.

And so this is Christmas for weak and for strong,
The rich and the poor ones, the road is so long.

And so happy Christmas for black and for white
For the yellow and red ones let’s stop all the fights.

A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one without any fear.

And so this is Christmas and what have we done
Another year over, a new one just begun.

And so happy Christmas we hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones, the old and the young.

A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one without any fear.

War is over if you want it, war is over now.
