As the deadline for this year’s In-House Design Awards is just around the corner, we’re excited to announce the outstanding in-house experts who will act as judges for the competition. Meet Andy Brenits, Robin Colangelo and Ed Roberts.
These fantastic in-house leaders are lending their sharp eyes and deep understanding of in-house design, and the constraints inherent to this work, to pick the winning entries. With their combined expertise, working for various brands and leading in-house teams, they’re primed to give your work the attention and care it deserves. Plus, your team’s designs will be seen by seasoned in-house folks who hail from different parts of the U.S.
And for some advice as you’re entering your work, Robin explains that an award-winning project includes:
A design or headline so eye-catching that it literally makes you stop and think. After all, isn’t that the goal for most of our work? If you can get the users / clients attention you’ve won half the battle.
Andy is the Creative Services Leader for Arizona Public Service and President of InSource. He’s held in-house positions at major national and international brands such as Banana Republic, Gap, and the National Football League. He managed his own design consultancy for nearly 10 years before returning in-house in 2007 to establish and lead the design and production team at KPMG’s headquarters in New Jersey. In 2012 Andy relocated to Phoenix, Arizona to build and lead the in-house creative team at APS.
Andy is passionate about how design can be used to increase and drive profitability when used effectively and consistently. An inspired design leader, he’s accomplished at driving strategy and process for creative teams and has a strong record in building, managing, and leading creative teams that deliver exceptional business results and creative ideas.
In addition to his BFA in Graphic Design from the School of Visual Arts, Andy holds a master’s degree in Design Management from Pratt Institute. He taught Design Management in the Graduate Communications Design program at Pratt and undergraduate design courses at Rowan University, and currently teaches brand strategy at the Art Institute of Phoenix.
Along with Ed Roberts, Andy will be acting as HOW’s partner for the In-House Manager’s Conference (part of the 2015 HOW Design Live Conference).
Robin Colangelo is a strategic, results-oriented, award-winning creative leader in developing and executing integrated brand strategies across all print and digital communication channels. She is a design leader accomplished at driving strategy and process for creative teams with a strong record in building, managing and leading teams that deliver exceptional business results and creative solutions.
Robin has been leading an award winning in-house creative services team for the past 9 years at White & Case. In addition to her global role at a premium law firm, Robin sits on the board of InSource, a non-profit creative organization for in-house design leaders.
Prior to joining White & Case, Robin worked on the agency side as VP, Creative Operations for Arc Marketing, a Publicis affiliate. And at Ryan Partnership, where she gained a variety of creative and production experience working on multi-media projects including; TV, radio and corporate video production, in addition to print promotions and direct mail.
Robin’s recent work has appeared in publications such as HOW, Graphis and GDUSA and was selected as one of the 2012 People to Watch by GDUSA. She attended the Connecticut Institute of Art and graduated as class valedictorian specializing in graphic design and fine art.

Ed is a regular contributor to HOW, and you’ve probably read his in-house posts or HOW magazine articles. He enjoys exploring topics on creativity, design, strategic thinking and corporate creative management. Ed has interviewed some of the industries most forward-thinking leaders, such as Chermayeff, Geismar & Haviv Partner Sagi Haviv, Richard Turley’s in-house team at Bloomberg Businessweek and Garden & Gun magazine Art Director Marshall McKinney. His latest article in the July issue of HOW is “Taking the Brand Outside,” where he features the collaboration between the in-house team of White + Case and Pentagram.
Ed serves on the board of InSource as the Director of Marketing. He recently developed, along with several insightful advertising professionals, a summer internship program for high school students that received the prestigious American Advertising Federation’s Mosaic Award.
