Site of the Day: DIY.org

DIY.org website homepage

Visit this website (which lets kids learn different skills like gardening, photography or industrial design and earn scout-like Skill Patches), and you’ll no doubt discover your own reason to love it. Beyond the awesome content that inspires and motivates kids to go make something, there are some design elements I enjoy. In particular I love that the homepage encourages exploration: The vivid icons are all buttons that link to pages describing the different Skills. Normally I hate “mystery-meat navigation” (where you don’t know what you’re clicking on), but in this case the notion of exploring the content and finding something that you want to try is powerful. I’m fascinated that the site designers decided to minimize the explanation and just push kids (and their parents) to dig further.
