Here on Site of the Day (and also for my Web Designer’s Idea book series), I spend a lot of time covering web design trends. Sometimes it’s an easy and welcome task. Starmatic is case in point.
What’s the trendy element here? The blurred-out, full-screen background image. Like many trends, this one is subject to abuse, but the designers behind Starmatic.com (a photo app that joins the likes of Instagram and Hipstamatic) really make the approach work. Why? Because it’s so spot-on relevant. Web designs like this give me hope for trends in general: After everyone abuses a style, the dust settles and we find that smart designers put it to work in very meaningful ways. Starmatic is a great, simple website design that uses the trend powerfully and appropriately.
