It’s a serious question. I know there are more than 135 million members worldwide, but for me personally, LinkedIn is pretty low on my list of social media priorities. That list looks something like this:
Social Media Priorities:
I think of LinkedIn as a stable for resumes and recommendations that I visit a few times a year. It feels like a place where executives go to hang out, not a place for youngsters. LinkedIn users tend to be older than the users of other social networks, with 55% of them between the ages of 36 and 65.
The group functions are making the site more dynamic, and some of the most popular design ones have tens of thousands of members. Within those groups, people can start and jump in on discussions and check out posted jobs. Groups for web designers include:
- Interaction Design Association
- Creative Design Pros
- Designers Talk
- Communication Arts
- User Experience
- Creative Designers and Writers
So I’m curious — are you a LinkedIn fan, or is it just one more social network to feel obligated to keep up?
